My name is Jessica Novak, and I'm starting this GoFundMe page to support my dear friend Lee Marley Ratapu and his family during this incredibly challenging time.
Lee is one of the healthiest, most fit, and inspirational people I've ever had the privilege of meeting. Originally from New Zealand, Lee has called Canada home for years, where he's built a life as a journeyman electrician. He's an amazing dog dad to his rescue pup, Wiley, whom he loves like family. Lee's passion for life extends beyond his career; he's an accomplished athlete with a background in horse racing, rugby, snowboarding, and surfing – all rooted in his New Zealand upbringing. He's lived a life free from peer pressure, instead choosing to support his friends through tough times, including battles with addiction. Lee's selflessness and kindness inspire everyone around him.
When I met Lee through my friend Aly (who remains one of his closest friends), I knew he'd make a lasting impact. Tragically, Lee's life took a drastic turn earlier this year when he had a seizure at work. After days of tests and diagnoses, he was told he had a tumor. Despite being laid off from his job at Propak, Lee faced this challenge with his characteristic strength and independence, though it's been tough for him to ask for help.
As Lee navigated surgeries, chemotherapy, and recovery, his parents flew in from New Zealand to support him. Recently, his father, who is battling leukemia himself, showed incredible dedication by being there for Lee despite his own health struggles.
Unfortunately, Lee's condition has worsened, and he's been hospitalized since having another seizure while driving. The diagnosis is leptomeningeal disease, with the tumor spreading to his spine and bones. His parents are by his side, along with his best friend Aly and his loyal dog, Wiley.
The purpose of this GoFundMe page is to alleviate some of the financial burdens on Lee's family and friends, who have sacrificed so much to care for him. Your contribution can help cover rent, medical bills, transportation, food, and other essential expenses.
I'm heartbroken seeing Lee in this situation, and I'm unsure of his prognosis. I wish I could take away his pain. This experience reminds me to cherish every moment with loved ones and to fight against cancer with every fiber of our being.
Thank you for considering a donation. Every bit counts, and it will bring us closer to supporting Lee and his family during this difficult time.
