Lebanon- The Relatives of Laura Katter

Late in my life I was afforded the introduction to my mother‘s family in Lebanon. The Geagea family I had heard so much about growing up. I’ve connected with these people and I can honestly say I love them with all my heart.
I visited them when the revolution of the people started last year, an uprising against corrupt and deceptive politicians .

The people I met were trying their best to make a life for themselves. They don’t know opportunity like we do. They can’t just borrow from the bank and get ahead. They are lucky if they inherit some sort of property and securing a job isn’t that easy. They all get a university education but there is no job security.

The current crippling economic crisis is affecting the average person’s ability to put food on the table. It’s that basic. They have to work hard and smart just to feed themselves. And now this horrific destruction of Beirut.

They are dealing with losing their loved ones, homelessness, nursing the disabled; how do these people keep getting up and going forward?

Every little bit helps them in a profound way and anything you can donate will have an overwhelming effect.

My brother and I were always excited when we heard family was visiting from Lebanon. To call their village of Bcharre (in the Kadisha valley) picturesque is an absolute understatement. They brought stories and photos of a quieter, more beautiful world. I haven't had the opportunity to reciprocate; my planned trip was made impossible by the current pandemic. But for them, COVID-19 is just one in a long line of misfortunes that have made ordinary life impossible. Lebanon has the highest number of refugees per-capita out of any country, and has struggled to provide infrastructure, housing and even food for its inflated population. Tense civil unrest continues to manifest itself in the shape of violence. They are ill-equipped to deal with the current spread of disease, as well as a government that continues to fail its citizens. The recent explosion in Beirut is only the latest in this string of afflictions, with economists predicting a catastrophic shortage of essential resources in the coming months. I'm no expert, so I encourage you check out the link here  for a more in-depth analysis.

I'm asking that friends, peers and beyond consider sparing some change to assist my kin, who wish for nothing more than the basic opportunities we enjoy every day. Any sum of money will allow them (and their community) to buy the bare essentials not available amidst almost absolute unemployment.

A call to humanity:

We have lost faith in god and in justice. Our children are torn, bodies are still under the rubble, our mothers tears have dried out, our youth are exhausted and traumatized.

We are sad, shocked, broken and devastated. Is this home or a nuclear test site. Why does everyone want to kill us?
Please help relevate the pain of those whose lives are under the rubble, please help us find the missing bodies.
