My name is Kidist Teklemariam and I am Director of Unleashing Refugee Potential, which I established based on my own challenges of seeking asylum and rebuilding my life in the UK.
We are a social enterprise that supports and empowers refugees and migrant communities into employment and entrepreneurship. Our work is driven by a desire to improve the lives of refugees and migrant communities, reduce the inequalities they encounter and to break the cycle of poverty: https://urp.org.uk/
Since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic we have been researching the impact of the school closure on our clients and have written a report based on our findings: Research on Home Learning Inequalities
We are really concerned about the long term impact school closures and home learning will have on children from refugee, asylum seeker and migrant families, who are severely impacted by poverty due to the hostile immigration system.
Most of our clients do not have suitable home learning environments and the necessary learning materials, tech devices and internet connection to be able to do their schoolwork. This is exacerbating educational inequalities and could worsen the attainment gap for disadvantaged pupils.
We are aiming to support 20 families we have identified who are living below the poverty line and are struggling to meet their basic needs.
All money we receive will go towards:
4)Revision textbooks (£20)
We really appreciate any help we can get to support families with purchasing the necessary learning materials to be able to do their schoolwork during school closures.
