Since 2020, I have experienced progressive loss of sensation in my shoulders, arms, hands, legs & feet. After an amputation & 9 mo in a nursing home in 2023, I’ve spent 18 mo working with doctors to control neurological pain with medication. Many ups & downs emotionally. Meds for neuro pain impacts the brain too.
Earlier this year, I had $25k stolen by someone I’ve known since I was 12 to whom I entrusted fiduciary responsibility for the majority of my retro disability awarded last year.
I’m trying to juggle continued physical progress, treatment for depression/anxiety, and housing challenges with energy to pursue reclaiming the stolen money.
My income is 1/3 of what it was when I could work. I I spend >50% on housing and utilities. I’m on Sec 8 waiting lists in SF, Oakland, San Jose & San Diego but the future of Sec 8 is uncertain. I’d like to work to the extent I’m able, to earn additional money to live on, but right now that’s not feasible.
Currently I have secured a grant and additional funding that will cover 60-70% of the cost to get an electric bike and the safety equipment for me to use it as an amputee. This will open my life up in ways hard for most to comprehend. I will have a much greater ability to get out and do things from exercise, access to the weights at the gym, a pool, doctor appointment, AA meetings, volunteer and paid work and social connection. Currently I rely solely on paratransit which must be scheduled a day in advance and as a multi-passenger shared resource, adds 2-3 hours time to anything I do.
At this point I am in need of $1500. If you’re able to contribute while I continue to work through the challenges, I’d be incredibly grateful.
