Learn Spanish and Teach in Spain!

Hello! My name is Evelyn and I will be finishing up with school in December 2023. By then, I will have completed my Bachelor’s in Math(December 2022) and the Single Subject Credential Program(December 2023). Thus, allowing me to become a Secondary Math teacher! Finishing the program in December presents a challenge for finding a job at that time. This is because it is in the middle of the academic school year and so it can be hard to find a job opening at this time. Because of this, most people who finish in December find an unrelated job for the time being or they substitute teach day-to-day. While student teaching, I have really found my passion for teaching youth. I enjoy making connections with them, trying to be a positive role model for them, seeing their eyes light up when they begin to understand something, and being able to learn from them too! I am so eager to teach and have a consistent classroom, that unfortunately, I feel that neither of these options will further my career.

Enter “Teaching abroad in Spain!” I have a friend who taught abroad through this program (linked here) and her experience looked incredible! I began looking into the program more and more and it seemed to be a perfect fit for me. This program has representatives in the US and in Spain that will be able to guide and assist me. They offer a variety of different supports to help us before and throughout the program - visa assistance, airport pickup, four-day orientation, networking opportunities, housing information, insurance, medical assistance, and continued support from staff in Madrid. These supports explain the program fees.

Through this program, I’ve been given an amazing opportunity to be a cultural assistant in Madrid, Spain from January 2023 until the end of June 2023. The program will place me at a public school in the region of Madrid, where I will be earning a stipend. My main goal is to help students progress their English-speaking skills and to familiarize them with the culture and different practices in the US.

A huge reason why I want to do this is because I had a student at the beginning of my student teaching who only spoke Spanish. Since meeting her, it has been a goal of mine to learn Spanish so that I could be of better help to students who speak Spanish. Being immersed in Spanish culture and working with bilingual students will help me develop my Spanish skills. While in Spain, I will be taking Spanish classes at a local school so that I can come back to the US fluent in Spanish so that I can offer more support to the students in my classes that speak little English.

I could be placed in the city center itself, or in a surrounding area. I will be finding my own accommodations and using the safe and easy-to-use public transit systems. Rent varies depending on which area I plan on living. The program recommends bringing approximately $3,000 to cover living expenses until my first paycheck arrives.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! Each donation, no matter how big or small, will bring me closer to fulfilling my dream of getting a chance to work with and impact the lives of students abroad.

Your support will help me cover the costs of this program, obtain a visa, pay for the first month of living expenses, and flights. I plan on making the most of this experience with everything donated. Thank you for your generosity.
