The mission of Learn For Life Hartford is to bring math tutoring to inner city Hartford students and residents, at no cost for classes or basic learning supplies. There is an unequivocal need for the Learn For Life program.
Math is the single largest impediment to the GED. Students need assistance with homework and college prep tests.
Math is involved in every aspect of everyday life. On the job, blueprints must be translated into real construction and calculations must be made in every phase.
The United States ranks 30th in the world for math, and the Hartford school system is worse. Constant reductions in the Hartford education budget, social promotion and lack of disciplinehave resulted in an appalling level of math literacy, and a deplorable graduation rate.
In Hartford 23.7% of residents had an income below the poverty level in 2022, which was 63.9% greater than the poverty level of 9.8% across the entire state of Connecticut, according to city-data.com.
Census data report that there are more than 30,000 people (over 25%) in Hartford without a high school diploma, or equivalent. The educational system is producing a cadre of workers that is less skilled, and increasingly unemployable. In short, the population with greatest need is being denied the most.
Currently Learn for Life Hartford has 15 students in the Adult GED Math class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Learn for Life Hartford would like to increase the number to 30 students but needs additional funds to do so. Please consider making a donation to this much needed fund. Any donation no matter how small will go a long way in continuing this project thru the Summer and Fall of 2025.
Thank you in advance for your donation.
