On Friday, July 19th, my sister-in-law, Leann Wartella, went in to have an abdominal hysterectomy to remove large, softball-sized cysts on both her ovaries and her uterus. The surgery was extensive and risky with my sister-in-law already battling muscular dystrophy. Our prayers were answered when we heard the words “no cancer.” Unfortunately, our excitement was short lived. Within 24 hours Leann suffered a massive stroke. Doctors were able to stabilize her for 2 days but soon her brain started to swell from the stroke. She then needed an emergency craniectomy. It has been a little over a week and she is currently in intensive care at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI.
For those that know Leann she is the epitome of determination, perseverance, and independence. Although she is bound to an electric wheel chair and her range of motion is compromised, she has never let her limitations hold her back. She has been a teacher for the past 14 years teaching language arts for Kearsley Community Schools at Armstrong Middle School (with the help of her service dogs Gilda and Hyde). She has always had a passion for teaching and a love for her students. Her goal was to pass on a love for books - something that she has always found solace in. Her days were always long (starting at 4 am) but that never stopped her from doing something that she loved.
Leann has touched the lives of so many…both young and old. She has fought a courageous battle of muscular dystrophy from the time she was a little girl until now. Just recently she has taken on a new set of challenges.
We have started this gofundme campaign to help Leann and my brother with medical expenses and general financial support (mortage, bills) so that they can focus on her recovery.
Please help if you can, and please continue to pray and share for one of the strongest, most courageous women I know, Leann.
