Leah's Surgery and recovery
Donation protected
Since February Leah has had problems with her lower back and right leg giving out on her. it has limted her gymnastics. We went to countless appointments and were told mri was not medically necessary and finally after multiple visits to syracuse pediatric orthopedics she had a mri on may 2nd. 4 days later we took the disk to follow up and he noticed a tumor on her sacrum and did a ct to confirm it and both showed the same! So on June 12th she had a needle biopsy where lots of samples were taken ,and sat morning 6/15 we received the results! thank goodness its benign and not cancer but its a very very very aggressive tumor called Aneurysmal Bone Cyst (ABC for short), and only occurs in less than 1 in 100,000 people. It is in about half of her sacrum, and a good area of the soft connective tissue and nerves surrounding it. They can either be hollow or solid and Leahs is solid in the whole area... we are extremely heart broken that she will need surgery to scrape out(curettage) the area around it and than they will need to replace the part of sacrum with bone graft/cement implant. we are praying the surgery is successful cause unfortunately this type of tumor can come back in future and recurrence happens often. They mentioned also trying to do sclerotherapy(i injections of doxycyline into the tumor) but they believe it is past that point and a posterior approach for surgery is recommended. We are expecting her surgery to be in next few weeks or maybe less! As the tumor grows she can be easily prone to fractures anywhere around the tumor or sacrum bone itself. We are waiting to hear location of surgery but Boston's Childrens Hospital and CHOP in Philadelphia were mentioned do to location of tumor and her age.
will keep everyone updated. thank you! there is gunna be alot of time off of work and traveling coming up in our future unfortunately... please keep her in your thoughts!!
