On September 10, 2023, Leah started having COVID symptoms. She, Marcus, and their son Christopher all came down with the virus. By September 14th, Marcus and Chris were starting to feel better but Leah was feeling worse, feeling very weak with a severe headache and not able to do normal daily tasks, and having trouble swallowing liquids. The next day she passed out while trying to make the bed and Marcus took her to the emergency room. She was found to have low platelets and she was in acute kidney failure. The doctors in Corpus Christi were worried about her and on the morning of September 17th Leah was transported by helicopter to Methodist hospital in San Antonio, where she is now. She has received a blood transfusion, IV fluids, and medication, and is being closely monitored.
As you may know, Christopher (age 12) has an extremely rare kidney disease called Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (AHUS). Leah's doctors are thinking she very likely has the same disease, which may have been triggered by her recent COVID infection.
Chris is staying with a friend of the family and Marcus is with Leah in San Antonio. They are both missing income from being out of work and will likely have substantial medical bills on the back end. While the hospital provides food for Leah they do not provide a place to stay or any food for Marcus. There is no clear date when Leah will be released from the hospital, as of now they are closely monitoring her low blood counts and her kidney function. She is awake and feeling a little better as of today. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this challenging time. Any financial assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
I will try to update this page as things develop. Thanks for reading!
