Lazy Thinking Live Music Fundraiser

Hi folks! Ok so here’s the deal. Lazy Thinking is a food and music business. To me, the two are natural bedfellows and the Lazy Thinking concept is about taking their love of hanging out together to its logical conclusion. To date, I’ve prioritised setting up the food side of things, which now seems to be going well enough for me to shift my attention fully to the music.
Other than finally finishing off and launching the record store website (which is 95% done, cross my heart) this involves launching our live shows. These will occur every Sunday afternoon/evening (initially, with perhaps a second night added at a later date). The programming will consist entirely of championing new and emerging local artists, chosen by us or in partnership with the many local labels and artists that live in the area and work with us constantly for the store. It will always retain a focus on new and emerging, innovative and exciting local music.
The intention is to in some small way (or not small way), become a part of the infrastructure and support network (which can be very limited) out there to provide talented, emerging artists with support and exposure as they try and build an audience and industry attention. And with so many small labels and so many artists living in Dulwich Hill and its surrounding suburbs, I want the Sunday shows and Lazy Thinking in general to provide a safe, social central space for that community.
Here’s the rub. We don’t have a PA and we need one. And we need quite a good one so we can do this thing properly and ensure we do justice to the artists we’ve programming. And good PAs cost a few bob. After seven months of no income and formidable setup costs to launch Lazy Thinking, the one thing I don’t have is capital. And thus here we are.
So that’s where I’m at. Dulwich Hill has been quickly emerging as a new hub of music (and especially experimental music) in Sydney for a few years now. With Butcher’s Brew opening few years ago and labels in the immediate area including (among others) Hospital Hill, Splitrec, my own Lazy Thinking Records to name a few, things are gathering apace. I really want to play a key role in developing this a lot further, quickly.
So why should you support this? This is a bloody good question. And look I get it. Times are really tough at the moment. Discretionary spending needs to be very carefully considered, as does any philanthropic spending.
In summary, if you support this, you’ll be supporting:
1) Local, emerging artists. No innocuous background ambience to be found here. Our program will focus on exciting, emerging artists from Eora/Sydney, with an emphasis on hyper local artists from the area. We’ll provide them with a stage, an excellent sound system and heavy promotion of all shows. We’ll always prioritise shining a torch on lesser known artists we think deserve attention
2) The fast-emerging development of Dulwich Hill as a music hub and in particular a hub of exciting, innovative contemporary music. More and more people and people from the arts and music community are moving into the Dulwich Hill area. The intention of Lazy Sundays (and more broadly the Lazy Thinking venue) is to provide this growing community with a new, dynamic performance space and grow awareness and the audience of locally based artists and musicians within the broader community. Importantly, note that we have now successfully navigated all red tape, procured all licenses and cleared all other obstacles regarding this and are otherwise ready to go.
So If you think the above is a worthy cause I’d really appreciate your support. Full disclosure. I’ve put everything I have/had in the world into Lazy Thinking and right now, have nothing to give you in return and I don’t want to offend you by offering meaningless tidbits, things I don’t have or can’t afford or by using inaccurate descriptions of what this is. I’m well aware of the profound privilege of my position in asking you to support this, so please consider carefully before parting with your hard earned money.
Just know that I will work tirelessly on this (I already am) and in ensuring it produces the most jiving nights Dulwich Hill has ever seen, as it continues to grow into the arts and music hub it should be.
