Layla's Journey: From Coma to Healing

On Monday, June 9th, Layla had her first OB appointment, and tragically, we learned that she had experienced a miscarriage. As if that news wasn’t hard enough, things took an even worse turn. The very next day, June 10th, Layla was scheduled for a DNC procedure.

However, while she was going into recovery, she started seizing uncontrollably. The ICU doctor later told us there were too many seizures to count and that they couldn't get them under control.

In a desperate attempt to manage her condition, Layla was placed in a coma and put on a ventilator. She was then transferred to a neurological science specialist hospital hours away. The doctors tried to wake her from the coma once she arrived, but she continued having seizures, which led them to put her back under sedation for a while.

By Wednesday afternoon, Layla was woken up again, and after a short while, the ventilator was removed. Unfortunately, the seizures returned, though less frequently. The doctors did everything they could, including extensive imaging, physical therapy, and tests, to get a handle on her condition. The good news is that she’s been released and is now home in North Carolina, beginning a long journey of healing.

The road ahead for her is going to be very challenging. Layla will be unable to work for the foreseeable future, which will make it difficult to cover moving costs, daily expenses, and her recovery.

Our immediate goal is to get her back to West Virginia so that we can all support her during this time. It’s going to take a lot of time, and resources to help her recover, and we are exploring every option to ensure she has the best care and support as possible.
