Michelle was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) at 26 years old and forced to quit her job just a few short years later. She is now 54 and has been on permanent disability for more than 20 years. With her particular form of MS, she has severe seizures and mobility issues. It is not uncommon for her to lose her vision completely at times and become bedridden. Michelle relies on her service dog, Robbie, to maintain her independence. With his help, and the support of her friends, she has managed to remain in her home and independent. Robbie is Michelle's second service dog, and he is now ready to retire. Layla is a service dog in training through Leashes for Living. Layla will be a mobility assist dog, a seizure alert dog, and a medical alert dog (which means she can push a button to call for help). It is critical that Michelle is able to acquire Layla in order to maintain her independence and avoid the expensive cost of assisted living. Because of Layla's special training, she is one smart and capable, but expensive dog. Michelle needs $24,000 to bring Layla home.
When I was talking to Michelle to organize this fundraiser, she told me,
"It has been 28 years that I have been dealing with seizures and MS, but I've never had to do it alone. I've always had the privilege of having a good service animal to help me."
For Michelle, Layla will be her constant companion and friend. They will be almost inseparable for the next 10 years.
Please donate to help Michelle and Layla in the next chapter!
