Help Us Lay Barbara Smith ("Ms. B," "Big B," "Big Barb") to Rest

It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of our beloved mother, Barbara Smith — affectionately known by many as “Ms. B,” “Big B,” or “Big Barb.” She passed after a long and painful journey with ongoing health complications. Barbara endured severely clogged arteries, a devastating bedsore infection that reached the bone, and two cardiac arrests. After the second, she was no longer able to recover, and was placed in hospice care, unresponsive and unable to speak or respond to the family who loved her so deeply.

Barbara wasn’t just our mom — she was a mother figure and source of love, strength, and wisdom to many across generations. Her heart and home were always open, and she touched countless lives through her generosity, warmth, and unwavering support. We are honored to have called her our mother, and we want to celebrate and remember her in a way that reflects the deep impact she made on the world around her.

Unfortunately, while she did have a small life insurance policy, it only covers half of the estimated $22,000 needed for a standard funeral service. We are doing our best to raise the remaining funds to give her the peaceful, dignified farewell she deserves.

Over the past few months, our family has been deeply affected — mentally and emotionally — as we stood by her side through endless surgeries, intubation, and moments of acute delirium. While we are grateful for the time we had with her, saying goodbye has left us heartbroken and in need of support.

We are reaching out to our community — to those who knew and loved Barbara — to help us honor her life and legacy. Any amount, no matter how small, will bring us closer to laying her to rest with love, grace, and dignity.

If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this with others. We are truly grateful for your kindness and support during this difficult time.

With love and thanks,
