My name is Kimberly, and in May of 2023, I encountered a deeply unsettling revelation. I discovered a tracking device—specifically, an Apple AirTag—hidden among my possessions. This small, seemingly innocuous device had been silently chronicling my movements for at least six months. AirTags are designed to keep track of personal belongings and notify their owner via their connected Apple device whenever the tagged item moves or is located. This technology meant that my stalker was privy to all my locations and movements, receiving real-time updates on my whereabouts. The extent of this surveillance was chillingly confirmed when my stalker reached out unsolicited to people I had been with, including my roommate, revealing an intimate knowledge of my interactions and activities. I have not been able to go anywhere alone since last May.
Upon uncovering the tracking device, I immediately looked up its registration, which unmistakably linked it to my stalker. Armed with this evidence, I approached the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), expecting urgent action. Instead, I was met with reluctance; they were unwilling to file a police report. My situation escalated in December following an incident that left me deeply frightened, compelling HPD to finally reluctantly file a report. Yet, challenges persisted. When evidence of tampering appeared on my cell phone bill later that month, HPD's response was to refuse filing a report and suggest that I pursue the matter in civil court, despite the obvious and escalating threat. The police officer who responded also advised me to "maybe just leave Hawai'i".
During my interactions with HPD, I presented them with evidence of weapons in my stalker's possession, both registered and unregistered, including silencers and home manufactured suppressors—explicitly illegal in Hawaii. I also presented them with proof of insurance fraud and other criminal activities by my stalker. This additional proof of danger did little to change their stance, and they continue to show reluctance in providing the assistance and protection I desperate need.
The lack of adequate response from local law enforcement is in sharp contrast with the successful interventions seen in other states, where multiple collaborations between law enforcement and Apple have led to meaningful support for victims of stalking involving AirTags. These cases have shown that proactive measures can significantly impact victims' safety and peace of mind.
The necessity for immediate and effective action was further underscored by the tragic shooting of three women in Honolulu in January 2024. This incident, which prompted concerned calls from those aware of my predicament, highlights the pressing danger and the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures. I’m sure you’ve noticed my lack of social engagement this past year, and an unusual silence and absence on the water, a place that was once my sanctuary has become where I am most vulnerable.
The decision to seek public support has taken an emotional and social toll, stemming from the severe public stigma and scrutiny stalking victims inevitably face. The revelation of my situation will shift public perception of me from a strong, female advocate for wildlife conservation to a victim defined by vulnerability and fear. This perception change has been accompanied by a profound sense of shame and isolation.
How Your Support Can Help:
Legal Support and Advocacy: I am seeking a permanent restraining order and the removal of weapons. HPD informed me of nine registered weapons and a concealed carry permit for three guns. When my stalker was served only five weapons were recovered. HPD’s advice was to “keep a low profile”. I need help to navigate a legal system that has thus far failed to provide adequate protection, drawing on examples from other states where effective action has been taken against stalkers. This includes pursuing justice for the misuse of tracking technology and the threat posed by illegal weapons.Your support for this campaign goes beyond financial aid; it represents a collective stand against the isolation, fear, and societal stigma faced by stalking and domestic violence victims. It is a testament to our shared values of safety, justice, and human dignity. I urge you to support this cause by donating or sharing this campaign.
Your kindness, awareness, and advocacy are crucial as I navigate this incredibly challenging time, seeking safety and justice.Thank you for standing with me and demonstrating that together, we can confront these challenges, shift perceptions, and significantly impact the battle against stalking and for personal dignity and safety.
