Law School doesn't stop for pneumonia

Donation protected
Hello to all of you who know Gus!

tl;dr - Gus has pnemonia and can't work while she tries to stay caught up with law school. Can you help her out? I am trying to raise enough funds to cover a month's recovery while she can't work her part-time jobs.

The rest of the story --

On Wednesday, March 2nd Gus texted me and said she thought she might have caught a cold from the kids she nannies for. Annoying, but nbd, right? By Thursday evening she was pretty sick, nyquil was obtained and she was just going to sleep it off.

I barely spoke to her over the next two days (I live a few hours away) because she was frankly too sick to even talk on the phone. Multiple covid tests were taken - all negative. We all assumed it was the flu.

After two days of a high fever, a trip to urgent care was in order. On Sunday, March 6th her mom and Joey took her to UC where things fell apart quickly. Her oxygen levels dropped, she started losing consciousness and the doctor said she had all the signs of sepsis. They put her in an ambulance and sent her to the hospital. An x-ray and CT scan showed pnemonia in both lungs and she was admitted to the hospital.

Now, anti-biotics are a damn miracle drug because by the time I saw her 24 hours later she was feeling so much better. The fever was down and that alone helped so much. But she still needed oxygen and her cough was (and still is) pretty terrible. She was informed that she could be there anywhere from 2-9 days. She did not care for this news -- Gus does not love a hospital, mainly becasue they use you as a pin cushion.

This is after one night:

Did I mention she was supposed to have her law school midterms this same week? This woman attended class from her hospital bed. I kid you not.

The good news is they were able to send her home on the third day. The bad news is, it takes a while for your lungs to heal from pneumonia. She is very tired and still battling a cough.

Gus is in her 2nd year of law school, attending full time after leaving her full-time job as a social worker in the summer of 2021. She currently supports herself, Joey and the four-legged creatures they live with through providing in-home child care for several families on a rotating basis.

She is very fortunate to have health insurance that will cover her medical expenses (these kind of situations can leave people in deep financial distress), but she needs to be able to focus on restoring her health over the next few weeks and not risking catching any new colds while her lungs heal. I hope to raise enough to cover what she makes in a month so she has time to do that. I hope you will consider sending her some love and financial support during this time. Even $5 will help if everyone pitches in. Thanks for taking the time to read all this and for being a part of living through late-stage capitalism together.
