Lavender Prom: Come As You Are

In spring 2016, a student at Central Heights High School (a Nacogdoches County public school) asked for permission to attend her prom with a same-gender date.  She was told she could not do so and directed to look at school board policy.  The student did attend the prom, but was not allowed to bring a same-gender date.  In Fall 2016, Central Heights ISD announced that they were cancelling prom.

A grass roots group of community members rallied together in September 2016 to put on a prom that would be welcoming to all students.

The event will be held in the SFA Grand Ballroom on May 20 from 8-10 pm.

But events like these cost money.   We need funds for the room reservation, catering, decorations, a DJ, a photographer, publicity, etc.

We need at least $1500 (although perhaps more).  If you'd like to see a group of kids in rural east Texas have an LGBTQIA friendly prom, please consider donating.  Any leftover proceeds will be split between two worthy local charities:  Pride Nac and Nacogdoches Unity Coalition.

**Based on our initial success with the campaign, I just raised the amount to $2000.  I think $1500 was us setting our sights too low, afraid we wouldn't meet them.
