Laure's Paris Marathon 2021

A year ago I lost my dad to cancer. On top of being a great sportsman, my dad was always a fighter. The way he responded to that news and fought was no different. He accepted all of the different treatments and when there was only little hope left, he was offered to be one of the first patients in France to trial a new American treatment called CAR-T cells. Whilst the result did not turn out the way we would have all wished, for a few weeks the effects were astonishing. If more research and trials go into this treatment, this could be a cure that would stop millions of families being shredded into pieces every year.
I will be running my first (and potentially last!) marathon in Paris in October thanks to a lot of motivation from some close friends. I will be raising money to donate to the APHP - Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris - and more particularly to the department that is working on this treatment and tried to cure my Dad. It will be a tough challenge but I very much look forward to it as I start my 12 weeks training today, and am happy to be able to somehow bring my Dad into this, as he always taught us to push our own boundaries and would have been so proud.

Si j’avais pu annoncer à mon père que je m’étais inscrite à un marathon, il ne m’aurait d’abord pas crue, et puis, une fois passée la surprise il m’aurait encouragée et sûrement même entraînée. Mais comme beaucoup le savent déjà, j’ai perdu mon papa il y a un an, après 18 mois de lutte contre un cancer. Mon père a été un des premiers patients en France à essayer un traitement américain pour lutter contre le cancer, les CAR-T Cells, et si les effets ont été positifs pour un temps trop court, ce traitement pourrait permettre de vaincre le cancer sur le long terme avec davantage de recherche.
C’est pourquoi, en plus du challenge sportif qui me motive, je souhaite associer ce projet à une collecte de fonds pour la recherche sur le traitement CAR-T Cells avec le service qui a suivi mon père. Tous les fonds seront donc reversés via l’APHP à l’association du service du Docteur Choquet à la Pitié Salpêtrière, en espérant que nous réussissions à vaincre cette maladie qui brise des millions de familles chaque années.
