Friends of Lauren

Our friend Lauren appeared on the scene in Lafayette, Louisiana in the late 70's. She represents everything that we love about that town and that time. She stood
out in the already bohemian vibe of the art/English/theater departments. While most of us just put on clothes each day, Lauren donned a costume. One day she would wear spikes and black leather and the next a bow blouse and skirt. You just never knew what you were going to get with Lauren. And for Mardi Gras? One thing we all agree on is that she was never boring.

That was when we were young and nothing could hurt us. In the decades that followed, we grew up, got married, had children, divorced, lost parents.....got sick. Through it all we remained friends . Lauren has endured and age has only made her better. When Lauren walks through the door, she is still the most interesting person in the room. She continues to be our bodhisattva of style, creativity, uniqueness....a bon vivant whose life is lived with gusto and passion. An artist.

It doesn't seem possible that Lauren is now battling stage IV breast cancer. She has been down this path before. Each time she's done it with humor and courage, and emerged victorious. She's well, she's Lauren.

It was a month ago that she found out that what she thought was scar tissue from the double mastectomy done two years ago - was cancer. It has returned and metastasized to her bones and her blood. There is never a good time to get cancer, but this comes at a time when she has just found great happiness. Lauren just moved to California to be with Tom, the man who at long last has given her heart a home.

Lauren is receiving care at Stanford University, known for progressive and specialized cancer treatment. She had insurance, but it pays 80% and the rest is up to her. Like many others who get seriously ill, she gets the added bonus of soul crushing debt from hospitals, treatments and doctors. Her dearest Tom is working weekends and overtime to make up for the days lost accompanying Lauren to appointments.

We love Lauren fiercely (you probably figured that out already). We want to help with some of the stress and pressure of those bills, plus regular living expenses. We want her to focus on her health, her family and her art. Any help that you can give will be received with love and gratitude.
