If you're a Door County, Wisconsin resident, or even a part-timer, you have probably heard the outline of the story that follows.
At about 5:30am on the morning of Sunday, September 2, my girlfriend, Laurel, had what can only be called a freak accident. After waking up to use the bathroom and walk through her dark bedroom, she fell 15 feet through her second story patio screen door. After recently having a new patio door installed, she was planning to have a second floor patio built. It hadn’t been built yet, but she would keep the patio door open (with the screen closed) at night to keep her bedroom cool on warm nights. She placed the dog bed in front of the screen door that night so the dogs could sleep near the cool breeze. Unfortunately, she tripped over the dog bed that early September morning and fell 15 feet to the ground below.
Not knowing what do, nor how bad her injuries were, she 'army-crawled' to her car about 30’ away and pulled herself inside the passenger seat. She was then able to call 911 for help from her cars’ touchscreen pad.
Once the ambulance came to get her, she still wasn’t aware how bad her injuries were. She was in a state of complete shock. Once she got to the hospital in Sturgeon Bay, x-rays determined she had broken her femur/hip, shattered her wrist, and broke several ribs in her back. She was admitted into surgery just a few hours later. The surgery was a success and she now has two titanium rods holding her hip/femur together and a titanium plate in her wrist.
She spent 4 nights in the hospital, then the next several weeks at her grandparents house while she recovered. She began physical and occupational therapy where she had to relearn how to walk and use her hand. Doctors have told her it will take a year for a full recovery, but she will most likely need other surgeries in the future.
Unfortunately, at the time of the accident she didn't have any health insurance. On top of that, she has been unable to work very much. Although Door County Medical Center has been incredible to work with, there are still a significant amount of bills coming in weekly.
We’re thankful Laurel's injuries weren’t worse and that she will make a full recovery. We’re very grateful for the Door County community for the support helping her get back on her feet.
As I'm sure you know, it's difficult to ask for help, no matter the situation. If you could help Laurel at this moment, she and her family will be eternally grateful. Thank you for your consideration during this difficult time!
