In years past, Laura was a basketball-playing, volleyball-spiking and toddler-chasing mom. Although she experienced some strange symptoms from time to time, she was able to live a very active life. This lifestyle came to a crashing halt when a freak basketball injury triggered her symptoms to worsen.
After dozens of doctor visits and scans, Laura was diagnosed with two rare conditions. Chiari Malformation, the downward herniation of the brain through the base of her skull and Ehler-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder that causes instability of her vertebrae and joints.
Since then, everyday activities like exercise or lifting her two boys became a liability to her joints and spine. She developed multiple torn discs and wears a neck brace 24/7 to stabilize her neck.
Her symptoms and daily discomfort have hastened a risky-but-necessary skull and spinal surgery on June 28 at Doctor's Hospital in Maryland to decompress her brain and fuse her skull and neck vertebrae.
The costly surgeries, coupled with the cross-country family accommodations for the five weeks following her surgery, plus continued care in the three critical months after flying home, are financially taxing. Her faith-family, close friends, EDS support community, and loved ones have sustained Laura’s spirit during this time. She has said more than once, “Thank you for showing up for me.” Let’s SHOW UP for Laura and the Wolfe family in a BIG way during this emotionally and financially straining time.
