Laura's Angel Army Fundraiser

Donation protected
A group of dedicated community members who are educators in Kennesaw, Georgia have created and formed a fundraising hiking trip to the Appalachian Trail (AT) for a little girl named Laura Addison, the goal to support our special education program at our school. Laura was not your typical fifteen-year-old teenage girl. Each and every day, Laura showed tremendous courage, determination, strength and a smile in her battle with Rett Syndrome. She passed away on March 30, 2018. Her influence has led many to create this cause called LAURA’S ARMY. We will be hiking the Georgia portion of the AT in June, 2018. Rett Syndrome is a rare, severe, neurological disorder that affects mostly girls, and is identified mainly by age 2. In the past, this disorder was linked with autism, but now we are aware of its genetic cause. The prevalence rate of Rett Syndrome is 1 in 30,000.

The goal for this fund raising event is to raise money for improving the lives of students with disabilities at Awtrey Middle School in Kennesaw, Georgia. These improvements could include specialized resources, curricular and extracurricular opportunities. We are hoping our “hike” helps raise awareness of Rett Syndrome & other disabilities from which children in our community suffer. The money raised will help to serve children similar to Laura who show significant delays in the areas of cognitive, motor, social, emotional, and communication skills, and provide teachers and support staff with additional levels of resources to continue to improve services for special education students.

Our trip will begin early in the morning of June 18, 2018, at Amicalola Falls State Park. Our goal is to reach challenging mountain summits, mossy creek valleys, waterfalls and catch some awesome natural views. Not to mention, packing our tents, cookware, sleeping gear and food will be quite a daunting task. The iconic trail will lead us through the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains and we will explore some of the state’s most awesome terrain. Our total hike will be 78.6 miles and will travel through Lumpkin, White, Union, Habersham, Rabun, and Towns counties. If weather permits, we may just continue on into North Carolina covering additional 100 miles for Laura’s Army.

We welcome others to join our trip for Laura’s Army. Participants under the age of 18 must have an adult chaperone. Your contribution and support will help to create funds to serve special education students like Laura at Awtrey Middle School, 3601 Nowlin Rd, Kennesaw, Georgia 30144.
