In September of last year, Laura Vasquez Diaz received the life-altering diagnosis of gallbladder cancer, leading to a challenging journey of medical treatments and unforeseen complications. Following a late-September diagnosis, Laura underwent significant medical procedures, including the placement of a biliary drain and initiation of treatment in mid-November.

As the treatment progressed, there were hurdles to overcome. In April of this year, a bypass stent became necessary as the tumor obstructed Laura's stomach. Subsequently, a persistent infection in May led to the placement of an abscess drain, resulting in the current reliance on two drainage bags.

Throughout this difficult period, Laura's condition required adjustments to her medications, eventually leading to substantial improvements in the size of the tumor. However, July brought its own challenges when the biliary drainage tube inadvertently aggravated an ulcer left behind from the tumor shrinkage, causing severe complications. Laura faced a critical moment, vomiting blood, and requiring urgent medical attention, including blood transfusions.

Amidst these health battles, Laura has been on disability since May. Unfortunately, navigating the bureaucracy of disability support has been a struggle, leaving the family without the crucial financial assistance they expected. Jose, Laura's husband, has faced the economic strain of turning down orders and missed opportunities, opting to be by her side as much as possible and catering to her needs.

The financial toll has been immense, with maxed-out credit cards, donations, and borrowed funds sustaining them through this challenging time. Laura's hospitalizations and periods of being bedridden due to pain and fatigue have taken a toll on their resources.

Laura's recovery is marked by progress, but the fragility of her health remains. Even a simple meal can trigger nausea and stomach upset, risking dehydration to the point of kidney failure. Despite having a cane, walker, and wheelchair for assistance, Laura continues to face challenges.
