Help Laura Fight Lyme Disease

My name is Jamie. And this is a story about my best friend. And like many stories it has highs and lows, but most importantly, I want this one to have a happy ending.

My best friend is Laura. I've known her for 5 years. We call each other peanut. We met working together in New York City. Even though we've never lived in the same town, we have a connection that is indescribable. I'm sure each of you have a special someone who you feel the same way about. Laura is my special someone. I try each day to focus on the things that matter in life. Love and relationships are what I think we should all invest our energy in.

Laura needs help. She is an incredible woman that has run out of options to get the help she needs and deserves. She is the strong and resilient type that would never ask for it. But there comes a time when you can only watch the ones you love suffer for so long, without doing everything in your power to help. It's time to really help.  I believe the power of her story can reach others and together we can all show her we care and that she represents our love.

This is the story of Laura.

Laura was working as a successful journalist in New York City at CBS studios when she felt what she thought was the brutal schedule getting to her. She began to feel extremely tired and worn out all the time, but she just attributed it to her work load. She finally worked up the courage to leave her dream career in search of a job with a less strenuous schedule.

Even with the change in schedule she continued to feel worn out and ill. She saw a doctor, the first of many doctors. Through a blood test they discovered Laura had Lyme disease.

They put her on a 90 day antibiotic treatment along with supplements and that had some success.

After 3 months of treatment, she returned to the things she loved, running 5 days a week, working as a reporter for InStyle Magazine and living a full and active life.

When you do the things you love, sometimes the world aligns. At that time she met the man of her dreams. His name is Matt. They moved to California and started their American dream together. While she was out there, back East there was family tragedy. The stress of it all caused her to relapse.

Of course, when it rains, it pours.

She began feeling really ill again and couldn't even lift her head off the pillow each day. She spoke with doctors who encouraged her to come back to New York City for further treatment. Following doctors' orders they moved back, but she continued to struggle with intense pain, extreme exhaustion and constant illness. Doctors bills and prescriptions piled up and her illness became so severe that she had to stop working.

Laura is no stranger to tragedy: her father passed away when she was young and now her mother has had to relocate to Florida. She has no family resources. She & Matt have been battling Lyme for over 3 years on their own.

Laura has completed another 9 month treatment of antibiotics, along with weekly injections, prescriptions, and literally dozens of supplements- all of which has had little to no success. Each day is a struggle, both emotionally and physically. The duration of this disease has had devastating effects.

None of the Lyme doctors, and none of the supplements are covered by insurance. While some limited prescriptions have been, only a small fraction of the medical expenses have actually been covered. Because of this, for 3 years, this disease has completely wiped out all funds. Laura & Matt have stayed afloat, but the disease has taken everything.

We need your help. Laura is on the doorstep of another major round of medical treatment - specifically, a surgery and daily intravenous drip protocol that is the last push to beat this disease once and for all. It will take 6 months to a year and well over $30,000, but it's the final option on this long road to recovery.

Please help give Laura, my best friend, the additional support she really deserves. If you can give a dollar, $20, or even an inspiring comment below, anything would be a huge help. I've stood by with a broken heart feeling like there is nothing I can do to help her until now. I believe in the power of people coming together to help others. There needs to be more awareness about the devastating nature of Chronic Lyme Disease and maybe this is the chance to further publicize that truth.

Laura is an incredible soul, like a sister to me. She's a fighter. She puts on a brave face and isn't one to ask for help, but she is hurting deeply each day with no solution.

Please join me in sending even the smallest relief to a dear friend. Let's give her one less thing to worry about so she can focus on healing and getting back to the spunky, hilarious and active woman she is.

We send our love to you Laura.
