My mother Laura is one of those people who’ve legitimately made the world a better place. She’s a mother, grandmother, godmother, wife, sister, and friend who worked for decades to provide for her family, always giving selflessly to others. She gave of herself until there was nothing left to give, working through two hip replacements, reconstructive back surgery, and other assorted physical ailments to provide for her loved ones—and now she is the one in need.
Laura was recently diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disease that disrupts communication between nerves and muscles. The disease causes severe muscle weakness, and she’s now at the point where holding her head up, swallowing food, and even speaking are difficult. Without effective treatment, her condition could deteriorate to the point where she can no longer breathe on her own.
There’s a treatment that could stabilize her condition and give the slower-acting immunosuppressant she’s taking time to take effect, with the hope of restoring her health and quality of life.
Unfortunately, the intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment she needs is extremely costly (Roughly, $150,000 Mexican Pesos—$9,000 to $11,000 USD— for the medicine alone, plus about the same amount for the hospital and after care). With no health insurance coverage, I’ve exhausted my available funds on medical specialists, medications, and the equipment she needs. Now, I’m asking her friends, family, and well-wishers to help me raise the money for this treatment.
Her neurologist told us that IVIG could start helping quickly. But I simply don’t have the money to pay for it, and I can’t raise the amount needed on my own in the limited time I have.
Please consider making a donation to help Laura get the treatment she needs. If you’re unable to donate, please share this campaign on social media and elsewhere. Every contribution and every share will help us get closer to giving her a chance.
