Laura Lee's Car for Ministry

My name is Laura Lee Wright and I am a missionary in North East Wisconsin at Camp Daniel an organization that provides social, recreational and spiritual opportunities for people with disabilities. It's a mission I have believed in and supported for over a decade. In my years of being associated with Camp Daniel, I have watched many peoples lives being transformed, especially those with disabilities.  For years, I have felt the call of God to be apart of camp but worked hard to ignore the call.  Last winter, I could no longer ignore God shouts…”the time is now”!  Being obedient to God’s voice, I made the leap.   Most days I still can't believe I get to be apart of a work that impacts peoples lives for the greater good!

My work is diverse, as I am now a fulltime caregiver to a young lady that is full of life and promise, who continues to surprise me with her dreams and her generosity! I am stretched daily as I think through the balance of developing and living in a healthy authentic Christian community and developing the policies and procedures that will propel Camp Daniel into the next 20 years of ministry. During the summer, I am privileged to lead interns as we develop them into the men and women God calls them to be. Throughout the year, God gives me opportunities to connect and lead big projects with Green Bay Churches and other national organizations in both Christian and secular settings.

I have a long-standing connection with Young Life Capernaum , that connection continues as I am a leader at Green Bay East High Schools Capernaum Club.  These young adults keep me young, and make me laugh every time I am in the room with them.  Beyond these ministry activities, I am currently part of the Wisconsin 2016-2017 Partners and Policymaking class.  A six- session course that has been on my personal bucket list for close to a decade!  The needs within the disability community are massive, I am under no illusion the government can be the whole solution, but the government can be part of that solution.  I am still an idealist and believe my voice and those voices who need services can help shape public policy.

But I have one big challenge!  I need reliable transportation.  Moving to Camp Daniel, I left a great paying position to now raise my personal support.  So the car I had with a high car payment had to go, during last summer’s camp season.  I have been lucky enough to use vehicles from camp, but now it is time to have my own wheels!   I travel at least two times a week into Green Bay (150 miles round trip) for ministry and cannot be effective without a car.  Having a reliable vehicle will also allow me to not only continue doing all the things already listed in this note but also give me the opportunity to visit our campers who are live in group homes and family homes across the state.

Why is this so important?  Many of our campers are not connected with a local church and have no spiritual input into their lives throughout the year.   Every week for almost 20 years, I have heard “thanks for bring the church into these rooms”, and been reminded we are to be “the church” in our local communities. Having a car assists me in this process.

Beginning in January I need to be able to travel to many areas of Wisconsin several times a month.  So, I need a car as soon as possible to be able to fulfill all the great opportunities set before me!

Over the years, God continues to remind me ministry is never done alone, but with other people.  Although I am the boots on the ground, doing ministry, those of you who contribute to things like a car are also very much a part of this ministry and are helping to transform peoples, lives!

A car for me not only makes an immediate impact on our campers, as I am able to mentor and guides them, but investing in a car, I believe will also have eternal impact.  I can’t think of a better reward.  A thank you seems so inadequate, but please know I am grateful for your partnership.  Thank you!
