Laura Lee will need a heart transplant within a few months.
Background: On September 14th, 2017, Laura Lee gave birth to her and Ryan’s beautiful daughter. Laura Lee had an emergency C-section with breathing complications, and was immediately diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy (heart failure caused by or induced by pregnancy. It’s a rare diagnosis that impacts ~1,000+ women in the US per year.) This diagnoses has led to several emergency room visits during her regular course of treatment, an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) implanted in March 2018 replacing the life vest she was temporarily wearing, and an intravenous medicine pump implanted in July 2018 to automatically distribute medicine into her body.
In June 2018, it was confirmed that Laura Lee's heart failure is preexisting and was induced by her pregnancy. She was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (an enlargement of the left ventricle) with signs of noncompaction cardiomyopathy (pockets formed in the walls of the left ventricle). After further testing, signs of a leaking mitral valve was found and heart failure started to form in her right ventricle. Her condition was deemed incurable through regular medical therapy.
In the near future: In order to receive a heart sooner than later, Laura Lee will move from St Paul, Minnesota to Scottsdale, Arizona for her surgery at the Mayo Clinic. She is anticipated to be in Arizona for 4-5 months while on the waitlist and undergoing her 90-day course of treatment post-surgery. Laura Lee’s husband Ryan and her parents will rotate as her caregivers while also managing the care of her children (daughter Lindy Lu, 10 months and stepson Ezra, 8 years) who will continue to live in Minnesota.
With gratefulness from Laura Lee and her family, we are asking for any donations, thoughts, prayers, and love during this time. Because of the travel expenses for her and her family flying back and forth from Minnesota and Arizona, the reduced income for Laura Lee and Ryan who will both take time off work, on top of caring and providing for their children, all support is incredibly appreciated.
