Laura Hayley and her beautiful family

Many of you may be aware of the challenges Laura and her beautiful family have been facing, but for those who aren’t, here’s an update. Laura has been battling Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) for quite some time, and she is in urgent need of a full liver transplant. This has been the plan for several months, and when a donor becomes available, she will need to go to Halifax for the surgery. The recovery process will require her to stay near her medical team in Halifax for several months, putting her out of work and far from her family. During this time, she will also need housing, as she won’t be in the hospital the entire time.

However, things have taken a turn this past week. Laura’s condition has worsened, and she now requires a partial liver transplant until a full organ becomes available. To make matters more challenging, Laura has just learned that her insurance plan will no longer cover the life-saving medication she needs for the rest of her life. These medications will cost nearly a thousand dollars a month.

Many of you may not be aware of these added difficulties, as Laura and Michael have continued to care for their five children with grace, never asking for anything in return and always the first to volunteer their time to others. Over the past 20 years, Laura has been deeply involved in NL Sports, coaching and serving on countless committees and boards. She’s a fixture at the hockey rink, ballpark, soccer field, and synchro pool, and has made a difference in so many young athletes lives. Both she and Michael are also incredibly dedicated teachers, giving their all to their students and have left a lasting impact on so many families. You would never know what they have been going through. Never a complaint to be heard and the grace to face all of this and still make others laugh. Even now, the financial strain is still second to ensuring that the kids lives are not impacted
