The Birthday Mission
As Philip approaches his 9th birthday, he has made a very intentional and mature decision. Rather than a list of toys or games, Philip has one singular wish: to own a high-quality telescope. He’s ready to trade traditional presents for a professional tool that will help him explore the universe. We’ve set up this page to give friends and family a way to contribute toward this goal in lieu of a birthday gift.
The Vision
For as long as we can remember, Philip has looked at the world through the lens of a scientist. While he spent years masterfully studying the giants of our planet’s past as an aspiring paleontologist, his gaze has recently shifted upward. Inspired by the resilience and science in The Martian, Interstellar, and Project Hail Mary, Philip has set his sights on a new frontier: becoming an astronaut.
More Than a Hobby
Even at nearly 9 years old, Philip’s dedication to space is more than just a passing interest—it’s a career path. Whether he is studying the history of spaceflight or meticulously following the entire Artemis II mission from takeoff to landing, he approaches the cosmos with a level of maturity and focus that is truly remarkable. His bookshelf is overflowing with space literature, and he can talk at length about the mysteries of nebulas, the physics of black holes, and the power of supernovas.
The Next Step: The Celestron StarSense Explorer
While he has mastered the theory of space through books and movies, he is ready for the practical application. For this milestone birthday, we have selected the Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 102AZ as his first official tool for exploration. This telescope will allow him to move beyond pictures and finally see those celestial bodies with his own eyes (which is his ultimate goal!)
This is his favorite "celestial body", the Orion Nebula
Why We Need Your Help
Buying a telescope is an investment, one that we believe Phil is taking seriously. Your contribution will go directly toward the telescope and a "cushion" for the necessary accessories, like filters for viewing different planets and protective gear, to ensure he has a complete, "mission-ready" setup.
Philip is already planning his future college coursework and career milestones to ensure he makes it to the stars one day. By contributing to this birthday fund, you aren’t just buying a piece of equipment; you are supporting the early training of a future explorer.
Thank you for being part of Philip’s "Ground Control" and helping him launch into his ninth year!
