Launch a Documentary on South Africa’s Queer Icons

Hi friends,
I got into documentary filmmaking to tell stories of queer artists in South Africa. Many of you have generously let me talk your ear off about this passion project for the past five years—and now, I finally have the chance to bring it to life.
How It Started
Five years ago, I was visiting Johannesburg when I came across a book with an unforgettable cover: a drag queen shaking hands with Nelson Mandela.
That single image launched me down a rabbit hole, learning everything I could about South African queer performance artists—especially those who resisted and created art in the face of apartheid. Their stories have shaped my vision as a filmmaker ever since.
What I’ve Done So Far
Though I haven’t been able to return to South Africa yet, I’ve spent the last five years preparing:
- Created a short doc (via Zoom) about an incredible drag queen in Cape Town
- Interviewed (also via Zoom) the same performer I saw on that book cover
- Researched stories, built relationships, and gathered materials to make this film happen
There’s just one piece missing: actually going to South Africa to film the documentary.
What Happens Now
I’ve been offered two weeks of accommodations in South Africa—a rare and exciting opportunity to finally get this project off the ground. While there, I plan to:
- Interview key figures in South Africa’s queer community
- Search through archives for historic photos and footage
- Film a concert headlined by South Africa’s leading drag performer
Document as much as I can to lay the foundation for the full-length film
Where Your Support Goes
I’m raising funds to cover the travel and production costs for this two-week trip, including:
- Flights and local transportation
- Archival access and filming permits
- Camera and sound equipment
- Post-production for the footage I capture
Why This Matters
This project is about preserving history, celebrating queer creativity, and honoring resistance through performance. If you believe in the power of storytelling—or if you’re just curious about the drag queen who shook Mandela’s hand—I would be so grateful for your support.
Whether it’s $5, $50, or simply sharing this campaign, you’re helping bring this dream to life.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
