Did you know that only 11% of women in the world use the word 'beautiful' to describe themselves?
Hi! My name is Cait Miers, and I’m an Australian Surf and Fashion Photographer attempting to photograph 1000 women around the world make-up without make-up on - in a bid to challenge beauty standards, reclaim self-worth and dismantle the idea that beauty needs fixing.
I've been a freelance photographer for 12 years, shooting campaigns for big brands and companies, but I’ve grown tired of seeing women constantly apologize, shrink and hide their faces in front of the camera. The truth is, my job as a surf, fashion and lifestyle photographer has somewhat contributed to upholding these ‘narratives’. I’ve shot endless brand campaigns that satisfy these beauty ideals, but in doing so maybe I’ve also stayed within the lines of the stereotypes I’m trying to break free from.
I've always believed beauty is inside everyone, we just have to choose to see it. So, I'm putting my skills and my platform to good use and inviting women from anywhere and everywhere to take part in this global experiment.
My goal is to photograph all different types of women from all different backgrounds through personal shoots and large 'meetups' in different destinations around the world. Celebrities, mums, athletes, grandmas and teens all together to take the time to face their own worries, all whilst standing up for celebrating the skin we're in.
Where's the project at right now?
Right now (September 2026), we have photographed 392/1000 women since we started in June this year (2026). We have nearly 3000 women in our database keen to take part from all over the world. We have done 'pop ups' where the public can come and get their photograph taken at 6 locations so far:
Kingscliff
Sydney
Byron Bay
Sunshine Coast
Torquay
Mornington
The response has been incredible so far, with news coverage on A Current Affair, BBC UK, ABC, RNZ and more. And we're just getting started...
Why do you need our help?
NOW? We need your help. Big time. The project has been completely self funded until now, and in order to keep traveling, photographing and sharing stories, we drastically need funding and support.
Through our social media platform Instagram laughlinesproject we're on a mission to raise $100k in 100 days starting September 14th by proving to the world why Laugh Lines needs to exist. We're using the next 100 days to share 14 'asks' which will encourage public participation and show the world why Laugh Lines is one of the most important and needed projects of this decade. Some or our 'asks' include:
- Can we get a TV presenter to go make-up free on air?
- Can we get someone with 1mil followers to take a make-up free selfy for us?
- Can we get someone to lend us a billboard so we can project the Laugh Lines images so far?

Where will my money go?
- Your money will go directly to helping Cait and her team travel to more destinations around Australia and overseas to help her get to 1000+ women make-up free.
- Your money will help fund a filmer and production team to come and start filming the documentary side of the project. We hope to create a documentary about the journey, the stories and the impact of Laugh Lines globally.
- Your money will go the production of a large scale exhibition to showcase the portraits
This is more than a photo series, It’s a global movement. And with your help, this could become one of the most defining movements of our time.
