Celebration of Life in Borneo for my mom, Latifah
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Rabiah, daughter of Latifah Hanafi Troncelliti, born Rita in Rome on July 22, 1941.
She passed away on April 14th at 1am in Borneo, Indonesia (which was Saturday April 13th, 11am PST). Latifah was a professor, a writer and an artist; she is survived by her 7 children, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
In accordance with local customs, there will be a Selamatan (life celebration) 40 days after her death, on May 24th.
Please help me raise funds so that I may travel to Borneo to celebrate my mother's life. The amount requested will cover the cost of travel (from Portland, OR to Borneo), costs of the Selamatan (food, helpers, etc), as well as to the family (local friends of my mom) who took care of every last detail of her burial. I recently raised the donation amount as these costs are higher than expected. See updates for details.
My mom had a close relationship with the local customs and traditions of Indonesia. She lived in Jakarta, Indonesia for 10 years from 1974-1984, having moved there with my dad to be close to their spiritual teacher and community, an Indonesian man affectionately known as Bapak.
Just before my father passed away (also in Indonesia) in 1992, he was building a house in Borneo, in hopes that we would all leave the US to once again live in Indonesia. After his passing, my mom traveled back and forth for many years, caring for the house and also gathering there for Selamatan to remember his life.
After retiring from her career as a professor, she moved back and lived in the jungle house in Borneo for a few years. Although for a moment it seemed that she would spend her last years here in the US, fate brought her back to Borneo, where she died peacefully.
The Selamatan will take place in her home, in Borneo.
I am grateful for any amount you are able to contribute! Thank you for your generosity.
