Larry’s Spinal Cord Recovery Fund

Hi Larry Lovers,
our sweet big 9 year old boy suffered a spinal cord injury while trying to jump down from a piece of furniture yesterday (1/8). He has IVDD (Intervertebral Disk Disease) in his mid-back and can no longer control the bottom half of his body. He needs surgery as soon as possible for him to have any chance of ever walking, pottying unassisted, or recovering. He’s currently awaiting an MRI ($3,500) to see where the damaged disk is. Once confirmed, surgery will cost anywhere between $9,000 and $11,000.
A little back-story; I rescued Larry in the winter of 2018. I was 25, freshly heartbroken, and had no idea what I was getting myself into. He was 5 years old and was found in a backyard in Dallas with his siblings, children, and basset wife; neglected, malnourished, heartworm-infested, and covered in cuts caused by his wire cages. He and his family were transported up to NYC and rehabbed until I finally got to take him home on 12/1/18. The second I sat down on my couch on our arrival, Larry jumped right up to his favorite spot on my lap and fell asleep for 10 hours. Craziness and learning curves ensued. He was not potty trained at any point so that was a big adventure. But we got through it. He was extremely underweight for the first year and not used to all the NYC germs so his immune system wasn’t our or my vet’s friend during that time. But we got through it. A couple years later, I decided to move home to California; bringing him on a 5 day cross-country car ride, a mode of transportation that he has never quite learned to love. But we got through it. He’s seen me through breakups, trauma, depression, new love, new friendships, pandemics, injuries, new cars, broken down cars, and many restaurant openings that took me away from home for 16 hours at a time. We have alway pushed through it all. And he has never once hesitated to jump up, lay his head where it hurts, lick the tears away, and fix me right up. Saving Larry has been the best and most-important decision I have made in my life thus far.
I never imagined I would need to ask my friends for this sort of support. This ask is a big one and one that I have forcefully swallowed my pride over. But after all he’s done for me and everyone else he’s ever snuggled on (if you’ve been there you know they’re one of a kind), Larry deserves whatever it takes to give him the best chance at a long and happy life
Thank you all for reading. Please hug your furry friends for me if you are unable to donate!

Larry and Meg
