On January 2, my grandpa Larry Risner suffered a heart attack in the home he shares with my grandma near Dexter. He had 10 blockages (all 80-95% blocked) and underwent open heart surgery a week later. The surgery was meant to last 5 hours, but lasted closer to 9 as a result of complications.
During recovery Grandpa Larry contracted pneumonia, MRSA, and had to have a trach put in. He was in the ICU for several weeks before being transferred to the rehab floor at St. Joseph Mercy. He has since been moved to Chelsea Retirement Community, and will be going home in 2 weeks.
All of this would be enough to keep some down, but not my grandpa! He's keeping his sense of humor and fighting to be active again. (If you know him, that should come as no surprise.)
When he goes home my grandma and I will be his primary care givers, but we'll also need help from a nurse, and this won't be covered by insurance. Since his stay in the ICU wasn't fully covered either, I'm trying my hardest to make sure he continues to get the help he needs.
Your support would mean so much to us! Grandpa's one of the toughest people I know, and with the right care we're sure he'll make it back to 100%. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
