Larry's Next Album

My first album, Kivvunim, came out in 2008, and was funded by Temple Mount Sinai. This time out, I'm crowdfunding it! I'll hit the studio with Scott Leader in late May, 2013, and emerge with 10 tracks of (mostly) original music (and the stuff that's not original is really good stuff).

When released, late summer 2013, the album (whose working title is "Ruminations") will include several settings of poems by the Persian Sufi mystic, Rumi, twice-transformed. I've worked with the translations of Coleman Barks, which aim to capture the spirit of the original in fresh, creative language. Elements of Barks's Rumi readings were further stretched into rhyme and rhythm, to fit the melodies.

Another aspect of the album will be a couple of liturgical pieces to accompany early-morning prayer or meditation. A "Modeh Ani," our simple prayer of gratitude, is paired with an original setting of "Elohai Neshamah," a meditation on the nature of the soul.

Finally, there will be a few covers, with twists, including: this rendition of Larry Lesser's "Healing Song," a bluesy cover of one of my favorite alt-country meditations on impermanence, a bilingual version of Chava Alberstein's Nachal Goses ("Dying Creek"), and the coolest Americana take on Psalm 137 ever conceived.

I'd love the support of my friends, and believers in the power of music to make the world a better place.
