Larry Joens Accident Fund

Donation protected
On April 20 2019 my good friend Larry Joens was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in Cedar Rapids Iowa.  Larry had just purchased a new motorcycle in Illinois and had brought the bike back to CR in a friends trailer.   After dropping trailer off at his friends house he left to ride the motorcycle home and his wife Natalie was going to follow him home with their truck.  Larry had been riding his bike approximately five minutes when a driver ran a red light and the accident occurred.  Natalie was one of the first people at the accident scene and other people in the area were trying to aid Larry before first responders could get to the scene.  Larry was initially taken to St. Lukes Hospital where he was stabilized and then flown via air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospital.  If you have ever met Larry you know he is no quitter and although he was resuscitated several times the first afternoon he would not give up.  After 22 units of blood he made it through the night and into Easter Sunday.  Larry's Battle was just beginning.  As a result of the accident Larry had three Operations in the first two days.  His right Leg was amputated below the knee, his left wrist was broken and required hardware to fix and his pelvis was broken which required surgery to install hardware.  He had multiple lacerations and an unknow number of stitches (we stopped counting).   Larry as been a patient at the University of Iowa Hospital since the accident and spent over a week in SNICU.  He is hoping to be transferred back to a Cedar Rapids care facility in May so he can recover here and get back to "normal".
I have worked with Larry for 19 years.  Larry is employed by Nextera Energy at the Duane Arnold Energy Center (DAEC) in the Security Department and has been there 41 years.  In addition to working at DAEC, Larry is a Linn County Sheriffs Office Reserve Deputy and has been a reserve for the last 20 years.  When Larry finds free time he helps with the Cedar Rapids Water Ski team and enjoys hunting and boating and being with his friends and family.  Larry is one of the busiest people I have ever met and he would make time to help anyone.  This is our time to help Larry.  As anyone who has been in an accident can tell you getting better takes time.  Larry has a long road to recovery and this go fund me is being set up to help his family with expenses that are not typically covered by accident insurance for example modifications to his vehicles and home for accessibility.
