Larry Davis: A Tragedy on the Fourth

Donation protected
Larry Davis, a kind and gentle soul on Dement Rd, Athens, AL,  suffered a horrific tractor accident crushing his left side and breaking bones on his right side.  He has many other health issues (cancer) that will impede his recovery.  It is a miracle he lives.  God's purpose for him is not complete.  Please donate to help relieve any financial burdens this family will have to endure.  Please hear his story:

The fourth of July Barbeque Larry Davis had been so looking forward to never happened.  Larry has suffered from cancers of different types for the past 14 years.  He has been in and out of remission three times.  Most recently he has developed a very aggressive brain cancer, for which he had, just days before July 4 been receiving massive doses of both chemo and radiation.  He wanted so badly to be with his children and grandchildren that weekend.  In an effort to help that happen, he was given steroids for strength for the weekend.

Larry and his wife, Alice, live near Elk River in Athens, Alabama, on several acres on Dement Road.  In preparation for the gathering, nothing would do Larry and Alice except to bush hog their property. The bush hog had been attached and some minor work was being done on the tractor so Alice could do the bush hog work, since Larry had not been able to do upkeep around the house for a while.   Larry stepped up to get the tractor running and when he started the engine, the tractor started moving and Larry was thrown under the tractor.  He was run over by a rear tractor wheel and then the bush hog ran over him while operational.  It was later learned that the tractor had been left in gear instead of in neutral, resulting in the unexpected movement.

He “somehow” survived the Medical Flight to Huntsville Hospital.  He incurred broken bones from his face to his ankles on his left side and some injury to bones on his right side. Bones were literally crushed under the 6 ton tractor and bush hog.   His intestines were severed and he lost a tremendous amount of blood, but he was miraculously alive.  He reassured his wife and children that he would be ok during the moments waiting for help to arrive.

To date, he has had three different surgeries to address his brokenness, rips, and cuts.  Additional surgeries could be necessary.  His Oncologist has started his cancer treatment again.  As of today, the medical team has been able to take him off the ventilator, but they are having to address blood pressure and heart rate problems, breathing problems, and platelet issues.  Obviously, Larry remains in a very critical condition.  He does have brain function, confirmed by his hand motions and other responses to his medical team.

His friends want to help, so Alice has agreed for a Go Fund Me Account to be set up to help relieve their financial burdens and emotional strains that come from that kind of anxiety.  Larry and Alice have their home and acreage for sale so they can move closer to medical appointments and have less to manage with their home.

There is so much need in so many directions in our world today and we know so many caring people have given and given.  But if there’s a way you can, please help this family.  Any amount will be more than appreciated.  And if you can’t, you can help by keeping the Account’s information in front of our communities  and share through Facebook, Twitter, E-mail, Texts, Churches, etc.  This is one of those times where we find ourselves answering the question asked so often, “Why do bad things happen to good people?”  Larry is one of the best men ever.

Without saying, the family really covets your prayers.

Thank you,

Deborah Johnston, Neighbor and Friend

An update:  Larry is able to drink juice and eat apple sauce.  Small but might steps forward.  His breathing is still stressed even though his respiration is improving.  Case managers are now talking with the family about long term care and recovery for Larry.  Keep those prayers coming.
