My Mum followed my lead recently, ADOPT before you SHOP, and went and rescued an Italian Greyhound after it's breeding life was over and no one was interested in her anymore. She came to Mum from NSW in a travel crate about 3 months ago and has had a very nervous start to life post breeding. It's clear this dog was not given a doggy life by it's hypersensitive response to anyone going near her, and soon Mum realised this dog had been mistreated - something that Mum was very unfamiliar with, and was saddening!
Weeks passed and little Lara very rarely stepped out of her crate and if she did, would not sit still at all. She paces frantically in and out of her crate, adding an inch or two on to her last adventure out towards human touch, but always back to crate HQ.
It's now been 3 months and Lara shows positive signs of settling in, and whilst the manic laps around her crate and a night dash to the food bowl are still happening, there is often times of rest, on Mums lap only.
2 weeks ago. Lara went on her first ever camping trip with Mum, out in a cabin where no other dogs were and plenty to sniff and see. She was moving around gracefully and free, but just as she started to feel extra brave, she decided to jump over an extra step bounding out of Mums cabin, instantly snapping her front leg (her bones are brittle after excessive breeding depletes the calcium in their bones) yelping in agony heard across the cabin grounds.
Even though she has lost most of her teeth from breeding, she bit Mum several times as Mum helped her from the epic ammount of pain. She was off to Colac Vet clinic within minutes.
Mum sent me a message after the vets saying "can you start a gofund me page?". I have NEVER been asked to help Mum and Mum takes great pride in being able to budget and stay afloat.
But this bill has knocked her back too far and she needs some help from good people.
(If it wasn't for my recent wedding, moving house and school fees for my step-son, we'd be in a better position to help her).
Lara is now at home in Mums care with a metal plate in her leg and unable to walk for now, but improving every day, slowly.
Any small help to get behind Mum and help her avoid the ongoing stress of financial pressure, she would be very thankful. She deserves some community love, more than most. (not that she would admit that!!)
Thanks in advance, from Mum and me.
