Laptop for Steve

Steve Magaña is going to college! Yay!

Steve Magaña has been accepted and will be attending the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and I could not be more proud of him!  Who am I?  I'm just a friend and mentor; a cheerleader one could say,  standing on the sidelines rooting for his success.  So I set up this GoFundMe page about this amazing young man.  I want to help him prepare for college and there is so much that he needs.   Holy Cross thought enough of him that it gave him a large amount of financial aid.  It  covers so much, but it doesn't cover traveling to and from the school or other necessities like a laptop computer.  A laptop is the number one priority, and it would be great for him to have one airplane ticket home to see his mom at Christmas and a few winter clothes for the "wicked hard" Northeast winters.

About Steve...

Steve is the son of a single mother who emigrated from Guatemala--twice--to try to make a better life for herself and her two boys.  She makes a meager living cleaning houses.  Steve, his mother and his brother have lived in a small one bedroom apartment in East Los Angeles (Boyle Heights) for most of Steve's life.

Steve showed promise at a young age, and through hard work, enterprise and perseverance, he managed to land a full tuition scholarship to attend a small private high school in Pasadena.  That meant he had to walk and ride a train for over an hour each way between school and home in Boyle Heights every day.  But he found a way to not only do that but to succeed in a big way, graduating just this year with Highest Honors (a 4.3 GPA) and an award as as an AP Scholar.  He accomplished those stellar academic achievements without owning a tool that is a basic part of most high school students' lives: a computer.

Steve applied to a number of colleges this year, knowing that, if accepted, the only way he could attend would be if he received a full financial aid award from the school as part of his acceptance.  Four great colleges accepted him and offered him full financial aid, and he recently decided to accept the offer from the College of the Holy Cross.  (Even though two of the other schools were located in southern California, Steve wanted to broaden his horizons by attending school on the east coast, so he chose Holy Cross.)  Holy Cross is a very prestigious college in Massachusetts whose notable alumni include Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, political commentator Chris Matthews, basketball greats Bob Cousy and Tommy Heinsohn, Jon Favreau, chief speechwriter for President Obama, and brilliant sports commentator Bill Simmons.

In order to pursue his higher education goals, Steve desperately needs a laptop computer, especially because he thinks he may want to major in computer science.  He could also use a printer, and a few other basic necessities.

Thanks for reading and caring about this energetic,  smart, talented and ambitious young man who is going off to college.  Steve plans to make a difference in the world.  I believe in him, and I believe that together we can make a difference in his life.

Steve is the beneficiary of this GoFundMe page and all donations will go directly to him.

Sincerely,

Gaily
