LAPTOP COMPUTER EMERGENCY
Donation protected
Hey all,
This past month, my laptop (a 16” 2018 MacBook Pro) died. I had it assessed, and was informed that it was the motherboard that died, meaning the computer is mechanically unsalvageable. My computer’s hard-drive is storing a great deal of very important files pertaining to my practice, including documents, images, videos, sound files, footage (raw digitized super8mm+VHS) and notes.
In addition to the things vital to my art practice, my drive also contains medical documents, treatment histories, digital copies of information on my medical implants/ devices, and digital copies of important identification documents that I do not have physical copies of. These medical documents are vitally important, needed regularly in my ceaseless navigation of the healthcare system, as I’m working with my care team and meeting new doctors and specialists.
Thankfully, unlike the rest of the machine, all the files housed on my drive can be salvaged. The unfortunate and overwhelming cost of this retrieval is $2650. In addition to this steep recovery cost I will be needing to purchase a new laptop.
I am currently unable to do any work, my laptop being incredibly essential to my practice. This frustrating stagnation extends beyond my practice and into my academics, as I am about to begin an MFA candidacy without a laptop to access classes.
Having a laptop is so incredibly valuable as I navigate working in the midst of my illness and it’s worsening. I rely on my laptop to sustain my site-unspecific studio practice, as I work from Emergency Room gurneys, hospital rooms, wheelchairs and my own bed.
Having the ability to access my practice as I contend with the great difficulties of my illness and disability is what allows me to survive, and this unexpected mechanical failure has caused a great deal of difficultly with the sudden and devastating loss of Access (in every sense of the word).
The cost of the data recovery
$2650
+ a new laptop, estimated at $3000,
Brings the total cost to $5650.
This unexpected cost is a hard financial blow I cannot afford, and yet must urgently be paid.
I’ve started this Gofundme campaign In the hopes of raising the funds I need.
I will be listing some small sculptural works and a limited edition of prints on my website in the upcoming week. In the meantime, No words can adequately articulate how much your consideration means, how deeply I appreciate any and all donations- even the smallest support you can give means a great deal.
Thank you so much,
X
