Help Our Church Support Two Asylum Seekers

Tax deductible
When a group of us from Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church flew this January to the U.S.-Mexico border, we met dozens of men, women and children who had traveled from around the world to escape violence that threatened their lives and the lives of their children.

Our meetings took place in Tijuana where they waited to seek asylum in the U.S., a process in which they were incarcerated, separated from family members and shipped from one detention center to another.

Two of the asylum seekers we met are currently still being held in detention. (Names and identifying information withheld for their safety.) We are working with other volunteers to assist in requesting their parole from detention, which we hope will happen in the coming weeks.

One of the asylum seekers we met is a teenager who fled for his life as he was targeted with extreme violence after he had survived the torture and murder of his family in a sectarian attack. During our trip in Tijuana he connected with LAPC member, Louis, who has served as his supporter and friend since then and has spoken to him since he was detained in January.

The second is a mother who has two young children. She and her children are escaping extreme violence, including gang violence. Her children were separated from her within hours of crossing the border and she has not seen them since being detained in February. One of our LAPC members, Liz, connected with this mother during our trip in Tijuana.

We are hopeful that two of the asylum seekers we met will soon be released from detention. While we are committed to ensuring that these asylum seekers receive the required necessities, we ask you to join us in assisting them with supplemental financial support so that they have access to additional resources, whether they remain in detention or are released. In addition, in the event of their release, your help will greatly supplement their ability to have additional resources while they live here as they wait for our government's permission to find employment and, ultimately, its decision on whether or not they will receive asylum and remain in the United States.

We will provide meaningful updates to what is happening with these asylum seekers.

This is an initial fundraising effort for our work with asylum seekers.  We anticipate that the work will be ongoing and we plan to seek further support in the future.
