Laney's Fight Against CANCER

Donation protected
My name is Jackie and my mom, Laney, was diagnosed with Choroidal Melanoma on January 28, 2016. Two weeks later, we learned that it has spread to her stomach. My mom lives in California and my family and I live in Utah. When I left California, my mom was in the best shape of her life and healthier than ever. Being so far away I sometimes feel like there’s not much I can do to help but this I can do. I can raise money so she can focus on her health stress-free.

The cost of cancer is high and my mom is the sole bread winner in her house taking care of herself and my little sister Jasmine. She has had so many doctor’s appointments since November that she has already used up all of her paid sick time.

My mom is blessed to have a good job but it is getting difficult for her to make ends meet with the loss in pay she’s suffered so far and she is not even out of work on leave yet.

My mom eats a very healthy diet and her oncologist said that it’s crucial for her to keep doing this in order to help her body fight this cancer. This is becoming difficult to do as she is having to come up with the money for added expenses that will not be covered by insurance and for just the everyday living expenses.

Choroidal Melanoma is a very rare cancer. Only 6 out of every million people are diagnosed with it.  It’s a tumor that starts in the eye but can spread to other places in the body and does so in 50% of the people. In my mom’s case it has spread to her stomach within a short amount of time. Our concern is that it will move to her liver or somewhere else in her body.

It is imperative that she has the best general health possible outside of her eye. This means the healthiest and highest quality food and supplements that are available.

A few years ago, my mom lost 90lbs and turned her health around. Since then, she has done everything in her power to stay healthy including eating an all organic diet, taking supplements, and exercising daily. As she approaches this cancer, she will continue to make the healthiest choices available to her but I need your help to make sure this is possible.

My mom has 4 surgeries ahead at this point and there may be more. Kaiser will perform a cataract surgery as well as removal of the melanoma on her stomach. UCLA will go in and insert a radioactive disc next to my mom’s tumor and remove it a week later. The hope is that it will shrink the tumor over time.

My mom will need to be at a nearby hotel for several days for each surgery. This is going to cost money as well as will some of the tests that will not be covered.  Some of the money we raise will go to the Genetic Testing that UCLA is recommending. This testing will tell us how likely it is for my mom’s cancer to spread to the rest of her body.

I know I am asking for a lot, but I also know, that as my mom’s family, friends, and colleagues, that we can do this. My mom has touched so many people and prayed for so many of you. Her faith is the most important thing in her life and even now, it still is. Please I’d just ask that if God puts it in your heart to give, that you do. Please pass this on to others that I do not have access to reach.

We thank you in advance for helping our family get through this difficult time.
