Hello, my name is Ellen Verde. I am an Italian-American and a Descendant of Ischia, Italy. I am also pleased to be a member and representative in the United States of
La Grande Famille et Procida (a non-profit French association that gathers together the descendants of the islands of the gulf of Naples.)
In addition, I have friends and family in Ischia, and I share a love and bond with Ischia and the incredible people who are the Island's true spirit and heartbeat.
My heart and prayers go out to my beloved island of Ischia and to the families of friends in Casamicciola Terme where a disaster has hit.
A landslide swept through due to the recent storms, highwaters and flooding and has left a trail of destruction as lives are shaken and lost.
Ischia is in the Gulf of Naples was engulfed by heavy rain overnight, suffering a disastrous landslide hitting the hamlet of Casamicciola Terme early on Saturday morning, November 26, 2022.
From all over the world (Italy, France, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, California and more), the descendants of Ischia have assembled; we are forged as one united force sharing hope and the desire to give not just sympathy but solidarity and support to our ancestral home of Ischia, Italy.
We need your help; we are calling upon you, our families, our friends, and our colleagues to help us, help Ischia.
Ischia continues to work day and night tirelessly, the young and the old, all taking a shovel to hand and digging out of the river of mud and destruction that the landslide left behind. The people of Ischia have banned together, offering shelter to those who have been displaced, cooking meals and, feeding the volunteers, helping each other in any way possible.
The most recent update on the Ischia Landslide Disaster reports the death toll has risen to 12. The city's port has been closed, and power has been disrupted for dozens of homes. Between 15 and 30 homes have been damaged, with at least 230 displaced. At least eight people have been rescued, and 100 remain isolated due to Via Santa Barbara being blocked in Casamicciola Terme.
If you have not already donated, please consider doing so in any amount. If you have already donated, we thank you with all of our hearts, and we only ask that you continue to share the fundraising efforts and keep Ischia in your thoughts and Prayers.
All monies raised will be sent directly to Casamicciola Parrish, Pastor Don Gino, and Santa Maria Maddalena Church.
Ischia may not be in the mainstream news headlines and may soon be forgotten by many, but this disastrous event is not over for the Island of Ischia. The clean-up and recovery will take time, and the impact on the hearts and souls who have lost so much and mourn for loved ones taken too soon will linger quietly forever.
