Hey there, It's not often we ask for help, but our son has recently had some extreme health concerns and treatment is across the country. We could certainly appreciate any support you can help provide us at this time.

My name is ElizaJane, my husband's name is Craig and our youngest son Landon was born with an extremely rare genetic condition. There are approximately 400 people reported world-wide with this genetic condition: nance-horan syndrome. This genetic condition caused cataracts at birth. At 10 weeks, he was rushed to Toronto Sick Kids and his cataracts were removed. The surgery took place within 48 hours of learning he had any vision impairment at all at a baby well check. I noticed he didn't follow my face like our oldest, so the nurse checked into it and off to Sick Kids we went. Since this time, he has also suffered with childhood glaucoma which is a common side effect from the cataract procedure at such a young age. Poor Arlo, his older brother, has been an amazing support to his little brother.

Life had changed as we knew it. Monthly appointments between the hospitals - contacts (in a baby!!), glasses that looked like bottle caps (+20 prescription), drop regimens, and surgeries.

Landon is now just 6 years old and is about to undertake his EIGHTEENTH surgery for his eyes. This upcoming surgery also requires 4 follow-up surgeries, so before Landon turns 7 he will have had TWENTY TWO surgeries. Most people wouldn't have that many surgeries in MULTIPLE lifetimes!!!

Since April 2025 Landon has had 8 surgeries for his glaucoma, with 4-5 more to come. Each time involving a trip to Sick Kids in Toronto (a 16 hour drive) for the major surgery; they have the country's only surgeons familiar with his type of case, then with all followup care done at the IWK in Halifax (a 4 hour drive)...

Unfortunately as Landon's case is so rare, he cannot get approved for any disability funding. It takes specific tests that simply cannot be completed. I have written the New Brunswick ombudsman to discuss this, as Landon is unable to complete the testing required to be considered disabled... but have never heard anything back.

Until then, the government will continue to decline our application for support for Landon. He also has fairly severe ADHD.

Needless to say I've been off work since April, and with 3 unexpected (and expensive) trips to Toronto, with no disability coverage... things are adding up.

Unfortunately we also have had my husband fall ill recently, and he too has medical appointments galore and is playing the waiting game for specialists.

We are very proud of Landon, and all hes been through to keep his vision over the past 6 years - but we want to help support him to keep his vision as LONG as humanly possible! The doctors do feel the prognosis is good, however we have to play it all day by day... especially with his iop in the 60's (the highest we have ever seen before - they should be under 20 but usually only get as high as 30, this time his have jumped to 60 which is why it's so emergent.)

Any help anyone can contribute to help make the next few months, or years (Glaucoma is a life-long condition) that little bit easier would be very appreciated!
