Lamar's Legacy: Helping One in Need

Donation protected

Lamar is facing the greatest challenge of his life and needs your help.

He was recently diagnosed with incurable chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). Over the course of his adult lifetime as a public servant he has helped so many people in this community.

Now it is time for him to be a gracious receiver of your generosity.

Because he is accruing astronomical medical expenses, his sisters (Delinda Barrier Rodgers and Kathy "Kate" Barrier) are creating this GoFundMe campaign in an effort to support him and Christine, his wife of 47 years.

ALL funds received will go directly to pay his outstanding medical expenses. Should there be any excess funds, they will be refunded or donated to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County.

For nearly five decades we have trusted Lamar to bury our Beloveds. During this work he frequently heard of people dying at home without receiving the kind of "comfort care" that would have eased their pain. This led him to be a founding member and past Board Chairman of Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County.

His father was one of its first patients. Lamar still serves on the Hospice Board.

Many of you know him from his decades of work as a civil servant with heart representing District 5.

He helped establish the Cabarrus Community Health Centers at McGill and Logan where he previously held the position of Chairman of the Board. During his tenure on the City Council he was a strong advocate for the Police and Fire Departments and instrumental in advocating for the development of Concord Mills as well as expanding the Concord Regional Airport. He has been recognized by the State of NC as the longest serving City Councilman in the state after 32 years of service.

Years ago when he was taking his grandson to school one day he noticed some children getting off the bus without coats.....such was born "Lamar's Coats for Kids" operated through the Junior Women's Charity League Clothing Closet providing coats for children in need throughout the Concord and Kannapolis City School Systems.

He previously served on the Board of Directors of the Cabarrus County Boys and Girls Club and as well as being a strong supporter of the Concord High School Athletic Boosters Club, CVAN and Cabarrus 4-H.

Currently, he is the Funeral Director and Manager of Cabarrus Funeral Cremation and Cemetery.

He is a veteran of the US Army having served during the Vietnam era but was never deployed overseas.

He loves spending time with his family and friends as well as Jim Stowe's oyster stew, Rick Rodgers' home cooked meals and Dough Girls drive-thru takeout. You could often find him at “Spiders on the Beach” and "aggravating the daylights" out of anybody and everybody whenever he could wherever he goes.

Forever the consummate politician, he has never met a stranger.

Throughout all of this he has not lost his sense of humor nor his Trust in God.

Please help him if you can.

No donation is too small or too large.
