Lakota’s Emergency Fund

On Monday August 26th, our dog Lakota escaped from the yard. After trying to chase her, my family watched as she was hit by a car. It was a terrifying moment and we feared the worst. We count ourselves as incredibly lucky that she survived, but since then, she has been in a veterinary hospital receiving treatment.

Though we only adopted Lakota in the beginning of the summer, she has already become an integral part of our family.  She's a six year old Husky and an absolute sweetheart. She sleeps with my brother Sam every night, and Dad is the happiest he’s been in a long time when he’s around her. She even accompanied the family on a trip to Canada and was a perfect angel the whole way, cuddling with Zane as he slept. Needless to say, this has been emotionally devastating for all of us, especially because my brothers and I lost our mother’s dog earlier this summer.

We want to do everything we can to help our pretty girl get better, but the veterinary bills are already near 10,000 dollars, with weeks to months more wound treatment and recovery. So far, she has had air removed from her chest cavity, fluid drained from her knees, and surgery to fix her two dislocated back hips. While she’s not yet able to stand herself, we hope she’ll be able to come home soon. In the meantime, we are struggling to figure out how to pay for her treatment. This is a huge financial burden to our family, especially considering Zane is supposed to start college next fall and I am returning to my university in the next two weeks.

We’ve decided to turn to our community for help and would be extremely grateful for however much you can give. For anyone who gives 20 dollars or more, you will receive a handwritten thank you note from our family, as well as a paw print from Lakota. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. Below I’ve included pictures of Lakota with the family, as well as some taken after her first surgery to give you an idea of how important and special Lakota is to us.
