Kahton Anderson is coming home after 11 years. Kahton was only 16 years old when he was sentenced, and he is now raising funds for the education he was not able to pursue behind bars. He spent his childhood and his young adulthood incarcerated. He is now committed to pursuing an education and building a life dedicated to similarly situated kids. We (Jalan, Kelis, and Nastaran) met Kahton while volunteering with the Parole Advocacy Project within NYU Law’s Ending the Prison Industrial Complex (EPIC).

Kahton is Brooklyn born and raised. He is a deeply introspective person. He has spent the past 11 years using a broken system for what it says it is meant to do - Kahton served as a mentor in anger management courses, he got his GED, he never once received a single disciplinary infraction.

While Kahton was accepted into a highly regarded re-entry program in Florida where he would have been fully supported in pursuing an education, he has chosen to return to New York to be present during a time of family needs. Kahton now needs our help to support him in his education journey.

While incarcerated, Kahton earned his Regents Diploma and his Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Columbia-Greene Community College, earning a place on the Dean’s List. He wants to continue his education and pursue his Bachelor's Degree in Business. We are asking for donations to help support his reentry and his continued education journey.

Kahton is pursuing a business degree to help him set up a mentorship program focused on gang affiliation and redirection - Project Angel, a project motivated by his reflection and remorse on the crime that brought him here. Kahton wants to use his experience as a formerly incarcerated person to educate and provide mentorship to underserved children and teenagers in finding ways to support their goals. He wants to help build communities of young adults that understand and can access support networks to feel empowered to avoid paths that lead to incarceration.
