Hey everyone! If you don’t know me, my name is Laila Campbell. I am currently a senior at Eckerd College, majoring in Animal Studies. For my winter term (a 3-week long program), I have been one of 28 students selected to go study abroad in Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Up until now, going to Africa has always been a dream of mine, and until recently, I was convinced it would stay just that, a dream. Growing up, I was always fascinated by big cats, especially cheetahs. I was convinced I could run just as fast, if not faster, than them. Although my opinion on that has changed, my view on cheetah/leopard/jaguar print has not changed. To this day, if I can get something in cheetah print, I will. This fascination doesn't stop with the coat patterns of big cats. Anytime a wildlife documentary came on or was offered on a streaming network and had a focus on Africa, I would be glued to the TV. This started when I was a little girl, but I did not always understand what information was being provided. For me it did not matter, I was happy to be watching big cats or animals in Africa.

This may all seem like useless information. The point that I am trying to get across is that throughout my life, I have always had a passion for animals, especially big cats. I've always felt connected to these animals — not just caring for them, but advocating for them. Becoming a zookeeper isn’t just a career; it’s a calling. I want to inspire future generations to care for wildlife, while actively protecting endangered species across the globe.

This Africa trip will help launch that career. It's not just a trip — it’s the foundation of a life dedicated to making a difference. Going to Africa will not only be a dream come true, but it will be an eye-opening experience. Having the ability to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat will help me to apply my book knowledge to real-life experiences. Not only am I lucky enough to earn a college education, but additionally, I can use this African experience towards creating a better livelihood for animals in zoological environments.

This program will give me hands-on experience in animal care, conservation practices, and ecological studies in one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. Through direct interaction with African wildlife and mentorship by conservation experts, I aim to deepen my understanding of animal behavior, habitat management, and ethical wildlife practices — all critical skills for a future career in zookeeping. This journey isn’t just a dream — it’s a vital step in my education and future career.

As a full-time student, covering the total cost of this trip is a big challenge. That’s where I need your support. Every single contribution — no matter the size — brings me closer to this life-changing opportunity. If you've ever been inspired by nature, loved visiting the zoo, or believe in the importance of animal conservation, I would be so grateful for your support.

Even if you can’t donate right now, please consider sharing my story. Your support — in any form — truly means the world.

Thank you for believing in me and in the future of wildlife conservation.
