After years of miscarriages and infertility, we have finally been able to expand our family. First with our lovely daughter in 2016, and then, a miraculous surprise, our son, who is due June 7th. We were over the moon. I have been considered high risk from day one due to my history, my age, and a family history of diabetes. I've been receiving extra monitoring from both my OB and a specialist in high risk pregnancy.
In late January, I was laid off. The company was struggling, and in order to stay afloat, they needed to cut costs. Unfortunately, being 5 months pregnant already, I have been unable to find other work. My boss has, just this month, found enough money to bring me back, but only very part time. Not having my income has meant that we fell behind on the payments for my doctor's delivery fee and other copayments. My OB dropped me due to non-payment of fees. When the OB dropped my care, the referral to the specialist was no longer valid. They dropped me as well. So now, with a month left in a VERY high risk pregnancy, I have no care or supervision. I DO have the medications I've been prescribed, and I am taking them as I was directed to, but I need more care than that.
I have applied for Medicaid and gotten a denial. I'm appealing, but in the meanwhile, I have 3 weeks to a month left of this pregnancy and the only way any doctor or clinic I have spoken with will take my case on this late is with pre-payment. Even the local sliding scale clinic wants 2500 for pre-natal care. If I am untreated, there is a risk of stillbirth. After so many years of losses, we are terrified.
We're struggling to get the basics together for our son when he arrives, including a car seat, clothing, bottles, etc. We cannot afford to pull together this sum for treatment.
