Lahaina Kunishige's Rebuild

My name is Jodie Okimoto and my cousins Kim, Ashley and I are writing on behalf of our grandparents; Thomas and Florence Kunishige. In the wake of the Maui wildfires, like many around them, Tom and Flo have lost their home and every physical belonging they own.

This is a devastating loss for our entire family. Their house held the memories of multiple generations. On the outside, decorated with rows of orchids, a refrigerator for anyone to grab a juice, and a beautiful front lawn where their son, Curtis, would lay out his catch of the day. On the inside it was decorated with pictures of their loved ones, party favors from special events, and a collection of ceramic turtles and salt and pepper shakers (many of which were gifts, I’m sure).

Born and raised in Lahaina, Tom and Flo were high school sweethearts who graduated from Lahainaluna High School. Shortly after, they moved to California to start their family and careers. Several years later, it was the right time to come home to Lahaina, so they could give their children a high-quality education, away from city life.

Tom and Flo have been a part of this unique community for over 48 years and have touched the lives of so many people. Tom radiates positive energy and good vibes. When you hear his infectious laugh, it’s hard not to join in. His smile also lights up the room. Flo is a humble woman with an extremely strong work ethic. She has a precision for detail, which she passed on to her children. You can find Flo working in her yard or finding other ways to keep busy around the house.

Their kindness is admirable because they are so selfless and always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. This year has been challenging for both Tom and Flo, in regards to their health, the loss of loved ones, and now the loss of their home and physical memories.

During this extremely difficult time, we humbly ask for your help in getting our grandparents back on their feet. Your generous gifts will go towards:

-Rebuilding their house

-Replacing their vehicle

-Replacing their clothes and shoes

-Home furnishings (Couch, appliances, etc.)

Many people have been affected by the Maui fires and we thank you for your time and your gifts. We will continue to post pictures and updates on the progress of Tom and Flo’s new house, which we plan to fill with just as much love as before if not more.
