Lahaina Fire Relief for SHS Learning Journey

Aloha. My name is Patty Wurst and I teach at Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. Due to the recent Lahaina wildfire, our school was heavily damaged, with half of the classrooms completely destroyed. We have found a temporary home for our classrooms and will soon be continuing education in West Maui. Many families lost their homes and/or livelihoods.

Each year, the 8th-grade students travel to the east coast for a learning journey rich in science and social studies experiences. We need help to ensure that each child can have this experience. These children have endured more than they should have at this tender age, and having this opportunity will go far in helping their social and emotional well-being. In past trips, we have visited sites to learn about Spanish colonization and early American history, space travel and science at Kennedy Space Center, ecology and habitat preservation, STEM classes through the Walt Disney World Imagination Campus program (an intensive hands-on class experience involving sciences and humanities), and more experiences that a classroom environment alone cannot provide.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated. If funds go beyond this year's needs, money will be used to help the next year's class to ensure they, too, are able to have these experiences. Thank you for the outpouring of love for Lahaina and the Maui community. Sacred Hearts and our families will rebuild and continue to provide the best education possible for the students and their families.
